Plot:
From stalwart Starfleet jurors to a minimum of miniature-golfing Klingons, this docu-comedy takes a hilariously breezy and off-kilter look at the "Star Trek" fandom menace. Hosted by Denise Crosby of...( read more

I have this odd fascination with extremes. The world is filled with these various subcultures that are absolutely shrouded in obscurity, so it's always a pleasure to watch a documentary like "Trekkies" that really introduces you to a whole new way of living.
Although I found this entertaining, the film's lack of purpose really left a lot to be desired. It was more of a random collage of video clips than an actual polished documentary... we don't get any insight whatsoever into the lives of these people or what drives them to visit hundreds of conventions. Director Roger Nygard simply shows us group of fanatics and lets us come to our own conclusions about the characters... which would be fine, but we don't get to know these people at all. Instead of a charming, intricately edited, and intimate story like 2007's "The King of Kong", all we really get with "Trekkies" is a handful of little Star Trek related anecdotes. It's interesting while you're watching it, but it's instantly forgettable.
I was unsure what Nygard's stance was in regards to these people... he doesn't really present it in a typical comical fashion, but some of the situations are so strange and extreme that it seems as if it was there for a gag. In fact, I was looking up at some reviews for this film, and the common thread seemed to be that people thought it was hilarious... and I didn't even know it was supposed to be funny! I think the reason that people leave this with nothing more than a few laughs is because we're distanced from the characters so much that there's no reason to root for them. Another documentary from 2007, "Confessions of a Superhero", takes these people you'd think would be complete losers and makes them absolute heroes. I was hoping this would do the same.
The real stars of the "Trekkies" movie are the cast members themselves. In fact, i'd love to see a film entirely devoted to these actors discussing fans they've encountered throughout their careers. The story "Scotty" told about how he essentially helped a person through terrible depression and saved their lives was extremely heartfelt and powerful, and more of that would've been fantastic.
There was a part in the film where someone mentioned the extraordinary power of a television series. For some people, television provides an escape, and for others it's a completely negative thing. "Trekkies" never tells us which side of the fence these Star Trek fans are on... is it great that they've found something they love, or is it handicapping them from relationships, family, and friends? Of course we don't really know because it's not covered to much extent at all. I was very disappointed in that regard.
The worst part of this movie is that we leave the film thinking trekkies are just absolute weirdos. It doesn't focus on these people as being "real people", rather caricatures of themselves. The film doesn't erase any negative stigmas that one might have regarding hardcore Star Trek fans... and in that way, I think it's a huge missed opportunity.
"Peter, this is the WORST possible time you could have called me! Okay, talk to you later." Laughing at nerds is funny.
Fascinating stuff.
It's great to see the extent of Star Trek Fandom. I wish they'd do a similar video essay on Doctor Who fans.
This movie will make you feel good about yourself and life. Just be glad you arent them.

A good doc that really makes you look at your obsessions to make sure that you don't look like the people featured on this movie.
This board looks lonely. Be the first to talk about "Trekkies" !
