Plot: Epic tale of a 1940s New York Mafia family and their struggle to protect their empire from rival families as the leadership switches from the father to his youngest son.
A wonderful study into the mechanics of a Mafia family. Brando and Pacino (both of whom the studio did not want) give unforgettable performances. In fact the whole cast are great. Although I prefer the 2nd they are both great to watch together.
Perfect setting for the other two installments. The first graphic scene is pretty wicked. You know, with the horse? Woah.
This movie is wonderful. Francis Ford Coppola is a great...no EXCELLANT directer. Mario Puzo has a great vision for a movie as well as his novel which this movie is based off of. It also has a great cast(I can't believe how young Talia Shire is!),but most importantly this is a masterpiece and is SHEER GENIUS!!! I DEFINETELY RECOMMEND WATCHING THIS. YOU WON'T BE DISAPOINTED!!! One of the greatest films ever made!!!
This is well nigh the perfect movie. the long and in depth look at the machinations of the mafia against the backdrop of powerful family drama makes for a movie that is timeless as well as brilliant.
The only flaw is the fight scene with Sonny, such bad choreography! but it ends up becoming a framework for Sonny's own destruction and in that is the major contrast between Sonny, Don Corleone & Michael. The 2 latter being passive and skilled leaders of their syndicate whereas sonny is hotheaded and almost suicidal in his recklessness.
By the end the cycle has gone through and there is a distinct resolution that seals the movie as a classic that needs to be seen by any serious film buff worth their salt
MARLON BRANDO IS THE GREATEST ACTOR EVER, the whole cast does such an amazing job the whole cast deserves an oscar and fancis ford coppala is a genuis.
I really love the Godfather. I had been waiting to see it for a long time because everyone I knew said it was amazing. it really was, I wasn't disappointed at all. Marlon Brando and Al Pacino are really stupendous actors and together they're amazing. I would watch it over and over again. There is about fifty percent violence but none of it is too bad. I really would recommend this to anyone who iis looking for a fun time and an amazing movie that will keep you smiling. Francis Ford Coppola did a great job directing and the music to go with the movie was perfect and amazing to hear. FIVE STARS TWO THUMBS UP AND ONE HUNDRED PERCENT. PLEASE SEE THIS
A truly epic story about family,How Pacino didn't get an Oscar is anyone's guess.
Watching Michael change as the movie progress is the very heart of the movie. One of my all time favorites.
This movie is as close to perfect as it gets. Easily the best movie of ALL TIME. The only imperfection is when the punches didn't always connect when Sonny attacked that lady. Other than that, everyone filled their role to perfection. Always will be a classic.
Most people will agree that this is the best gangster movie ever made, and I agree. Brando, Pacino, Caan and Duvall all did a wonderful job and made us believe that the character's are real.
GF 1 and 2 were cut together into one chronological sequence and then shown on TV...good new way to watch these classics
This movie story line, still in some countries they are following. Considering the year the movie was taken. Stunning story.
Italian gangsters are just like us! They two have to deal with money issues, family strife, and sibling rivalry. This was one of the last times that Marlon Brando was still the great actor, and not the bloated kitschy king he became in later years. This was also one of the few times when Al Pacino reigned in his soft-soft-LOUD-soft tendencies as an actor and tried to play a real character. He should try that one out more often because his performance is layered and deep. And whatever happened to Talia Shire? She has a unique and interesting presence as an actress and she seems to have gone missing in action in the last few years. Connie Carleone remains her best piece of work to date. It is one of the great movies not because it is about gangsters, but because of the honest performances and that it remains mostly about family.
A masterpiece. The story of Michael's attempt at escaping his destiny, only to be trapped back into family affairs, is one of the most compelling tragedies I've seen on film.
Hey...who am I to badmouth the godfather?...but it wasn't that good...and there was way too many characters to keep count on...don't get me wrong...it was good...but great?...I don't know
i have to look this all over again more carefully cuz its story is too complicated to understand at once

in this classic gangster film you have Al Pacino, James Caan, Marlon Brando and also Robert Duvall. Francis Ford Coppola makes the best gangster movie ever made.
The first Godfather is my Favourite out of the three, played by many great actors brought this film together. It had a fantastic scrip and it also had Francis Ford Coppola directing what more can I say.
OMG! This was a helluva movie. I was bowled over by this film. Marlon Brando, Al Pacino & Robert Duvaal were jus flawlwss. The movie showed what real power was. It was a superb piece of cinema,,,no wonder why the world considers it the the best movie ever made.
Marlon Brando is Vito Corleone, also known as "The Godfather", who is head of one of the most powerful mafia families in America. Don Vito is a fair but ruthless man who runs much of his business by doing favours and expecting favours in return. The Corleone family are drawn into a bitter and violent war with other mafia families over their refusal to participate in the lucrative but dangerous drug trade. Don Vito is shot but the attempt on his life does not succeed - he is seriously injured rather than killed. While Don Vito is in hospital, control of the family passes to his eldest son Sonny (James Caan). Sonny is a hot-head, and with his contributions the war continues to escalate.
Don Vito's youngest son is Michael (Al Pacino). He has stayed outside the family business, and his father had aspirations of him holding some legitimate position of power, perhaps through politics. When Don Vito is shot, however, Michael returns home to do what he can to help the family through the crisis. He protects his father against the killers trying to finish what they have started. Michael starts to show promise in this violent world. He takes his revenge against those trying to kill his father, shooting them during a meeting at a restaurant. Ultimately, Sonny is shot and now it is Michael who finds himself with all the responsibility.
It may not be possible for a film to be faultless, but this certainly comes close. The ensemble cast are wholly convincing, and there are a string of well-known names involved who weren't at all familiar until this film. The story progresses at perfectly measured pace, moving almost gently between moments of calculated violence. The cinematography and direction are picture-perfect, with immaculate attention to detail. Every aspect of life in those turbulent times is faithfully recreated with great accuracy. "The Godfather" is a credit to all involved.
A movie that makes Al Pacino a star and Marlon Brando a legend. Powerful in every aspect, loved the score (Speak Softly Love)
Marlon Brando is excellent in the role that brought him back to fame. Based on Mario Puzo's book, "The Godfather" is a faithful adaptation that will satisfy the readers. But besides being a great adaptation, it is one of the top ten American films ever made due to its flawless cast, superb script, and brillant direction by Francis Ford Coppola. They sure don't make gangster movies like this one anymore.
Yes, this film is as good as you've heard. Arguably one of the greatest films of all time, The Godfather is a cinematic masterpiece that continues to mesmermize with its riveting story and A+ acting.
By looking at the artwork attached to this film you would think that this is the story of Don Corleone (played by the Godlike Marlon Brando), but it is actually the tale of his youngest son Michael (Al Pacino) who descends into the business not for himself but for his family.
There's not much you can say about this movie that hasn't already been said. It's a masterpiece.
Fear him, despise him, respect him - love movie!
Marlon Brando is the Godfather, the wisest, most loved and repsect Don of the times, his power and authority from New York to Sicily. We enter the world of his family, his trials and tribulations, how lifes are intertwined under his shroud, and how they are destroyed, and how others grow. Though despite being one of the most feared men that ever lived, The Don knows he is not immortal, and an attempt on his life throws his "cosca" in a bloody war in which there are many casualties.... and knowing that to save his Family, he must stop the war through his power and honor.... but in his mind he is preparing his youngest son, the exiled and indepedant Michael Corleone, to take his place and reignite the power of the Corleone family and bring justice to those who crosses the Godfather and his Family.
Flawless......... movie. I would criticise it for not being a 5 hour epic which followed the book, but the Godfather 2 pretty much told the rest of the story, and that was near flawless as well.
Marlon Brando obivously made the movie, but in my mind, Al Pacino and James Caan were the big guns. These two always light up the screen, Pacino, with his quiet intensity and presence, in opposite to the raging war monger James Caan, the Underboss of the Family.
So many contrasts, so many shades of grey, so many stories, lives and so much death... you would feel if you have entered the 1940's to 50's period as well. Its engaging in the sense that even though this is a work of fiction, it shows us that these people do exist and this is what happens. Its tale of reality in the underworld, literally. An Underworld, a world which is not our own, and admit it, we are all curious to explore.
One of the best movies ever made.

Perfect movie. Perfect Brando, Perfect Pacino. They can pass to you the feeling that they are people too, beyond the moster you see. You can see the feeling behind each murder, and you can see the cruelty, and the hard life of Mafia during the 40's on the U.S. Applauses, cheerings, Congratulations to Ford Coppola for this Masterpiece.
