Spider-Man (2002,  PG-13)
Spider-Man 4.0 Stars
Sam Raimi pulled it off. He not only made the movie that had been in development hell for decades, but he made it with style. While many things in the comics were changed for the move to the big screen, the spirit of Peter Parker and his story remains. Possibly the best superhero movie made so far.

Spider-Man 2 3.5 Stars
Much as I enjoyed the first Spider-Man movie and am a fan of Alfred Molina, the sequel fell a little short of my expectations. The story surrounding Doc Ock wasn't strong enough.

The Punisher (1989,  R)
The Punisher 2.0 Stars
Although darker and more in the spirit of the comic book than the later version starring Thomas Jane, this low-budget flick about an ex-cop taking on the mob he blames for killing his family and destroying his life is, at times, painful to watch.

Someone should have let those behind this travesty know that Frank Castle is supposed to be a dark anti-hero. I hate to say it, but Dolph Lundgren pulled off a darker Punisher than Thomas Jane.

Still, for Punisher fans, it's the best we're likely going to get.

X-Men (2000,  PG-13)
X-Men 4.0 Stars
Ensemble casts are difficult to pull off, especially when that cast is playing in a sandbox fans have loved for the better part of 40 years. Despite certain weaknesses (I'm looking at you, Halle Berry), Bryan singer managed to pull the story of the X-Men together and make it his own.

The first of the blockbuster superhero movies proved that a good supers movie can be made.

X-Men: The Last Stand (2006,  PG-13)
X-Men: The Last Stand 0.5 Stars
If X-Men proved Hollywood can make a good blockbuster superhero movie and X-Men 2 proved a good superhero movie sequel can be made, X-Men 3 proved that changing directors two-thirds of the way through a trilogy is a stupid move to make.

X-Men 3 wasn't just bad. It was terrible. It was a hollow shell of a movie that completed the trilogy, forever leaving a bad taste in the mouths of X-Men fans everywhere. I hope the studio learned its lesson, as there are more X-Men (and related) movies in the making.

The Crow (1994,  R)
The Crow 5.0 Stars
This dark tale of the dead coming back to seek revenge may be lighter than the graphic novel it was based on (or so I'm told). While the story keeps the movie flowing to its inevitable climax, the characters and their motives are absolutely fascinating to watch. Great movie. One of my favourites.

Fantastic Four (2005,  PG-13)
Fantastic Four 3.0 Stars
Although I think I'm being overly generous by giving this movie three stars, I must admit that I like it. I've never been a fan of the Fantastic Four comics, but I tried to go into this movie with an open mind. What I got was a pleasant surprise.

Is it cinematic greatness? Hell, no. Is it simply fun? Yes. Are there better and worse superhero movies? Most definitely.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer 2.0 Stars
Although many movie-goers had been touting this turd as being better than the first F4 movie, I must respectfully disagree. While the movie had a few neat moments, the character interactions were strained, and the story -- well, it was pure crap.

Two stars is being overly generous.

300 (2007,  R)
300 3.5 Stars
With a fascinating visual style and a larger-than-life story of a small force's struggle against a seemingly endless horde of conquerors, 300 is a good movie that could have been great -- if only the acting overall had been stronger.

With some chilling and creepy scenes, 300 really isn't to be missed. However, the previews used most of the best lines, so don't go in expecting too many more quotable quotes.
